Human-Centric Environments: Design for Health and Well-being

Updated: Jul 3, 2024

I thoroughly enjoyed the dialog about human-centric design for health and well-being at the Environmental Design and Research Association, EDRA55 conference in Portland, Oregon, in June 2024. It was an absolute pleasure to give three presentations about my work in healthcare design, research integration into design practice, and evidence-based design. I am thrilled that I have the opportunity to present my research project which is supported by the Purdue University Senior Summer Faculty Research Grant.

I am also very excited that I had the opportunity to introduce my recently published book “Environment-Behavior Studies for Healthcare Design at the conference. The central theme of my work is the connection between environment-behavior research and human health and well-being. Thank you so much for the audience’s enthusiastic responses to my presentations. My talks addressed the following topics:

  • Analyzing and Synthesizing the Linkage between Environmental Control Theories and Healthcare Design: A Qualitative Inquiry

  • Using Space Syntax to Examine Users' Perception of Privacy in Doctors' Office Waiting Rooms: Seating Visibility and Seating Preferences

  • Creating Human-Centered Spaces: Integrating Research into Interior Design Senior Capstone Studio Course for Service-Learning Projects

I always enjoy attending conferences to talk, share, and listen. Connecting with other scholars and having conversations is very delightful.

It was also a fascinating experience to stroll through the largest bookstore in the world in Portland. Reading through all the books about interior design and architecture and many related topics is intriguing.
